Meet Our Sponsored Friend Ody

Ody (Odilia) is 8 years old. Her birthday is November 26.  She lives in Guatemala with her mother, father, and younger brother and sister. Her jobs at home are helping her mother hang clean clothes and take them down when they are dry, and picking up firewood that falls from the trees near their house. She enjoys playing with a toy plastic motorcycle that her father bought her along with her younger brother. Her health is good.

Her father works planting corn and onions in the community in order to cover some of the household expenses. Her mother stays home and weaves traditional clothing to sell. Each item she makes takes a month to complete.

There are five people living in the home. The walls and roof are constructed of metal sheets, and the floor is dirt. Their house is not in good condition. They cover it with nylon and it becomes extremely hot inside during the summer months. It has electricity and they use firewood for cooking. They have potable water at home. Ody sleeps on a shared wooden bed with blankets.

Ody’s family is building a new house.  It will be constructed with more modern building materials.  It is almost complete.
